Hilori’s Magical Yarnorium

Hilori’s Magical Yarnorium is owned and operated by Hilori Thompson.  In her own words: I hand dye natural wool yarns and fibre. I am inspired by pop culture and nostalgia and explore many different and fun colourways. I specialize in Gradients or Ombré and colour changing yarn as well as speckled, complex  tonal and variegated yarns.
How did you get started in fibre arts? My grandmother started me down the rabbit hole of fibre arts at a very young age. I grew up on a small farm that fostered a love and appreciation for hand made.

What inspires your work?
My kids really inspire me to continue my adventures in art and colour with them. Creativity and imagination are two of the biggest themes in our home.  I’ve always had an interest in yarn and fibre. Being a Fine Art graduate, transferring my art to my favourite craft seemed like the natural next step. There is something very entrancing and deeply gratifying to me about watching a transformation of colour. The magic is in the happy accidents!

Do you have a favourite item that you have created?
This constantly changes. I dye one colour, and I add to it or try a different technique and suddenly I have a dozen new favourites. I really enjoy the new Mittkits and Sockkits and 6-Packs. There’s something really great about having enough yarn for a project and not too much left over for the scrap bin. I want to use it all up!
Hilori’s special contribution to the Festival this year is a limited edition custom colourway yarn dyed to match the colours in our logo. It will be for sale at the information desk at the Festival. Thanks Hilori!
